In the event of a positive laboratory test result, the lab’s physicians will contact the employee to determine if there is a legitimate medical reason for the positive result (such as taking prescription medications). If no legitimate reason can be found, the employer is then contacted with the test results.
Confronting an employee about a positive drug or alcohol test can be difficult, but having a drug free workplace policy – including the types of tests employees will be required to take, drug testing frequency, and written consequences of a positive test results – in place can help make the process easier.
